Das 2025 von Ayebainemi Abieyuwa Ése, Eden Alero und Evan Ifekoya gegründete MODUPE-Ensemble entstand im Kontext des gleichnamigen Films und vereint Stimme, Trommel und Bewegung als sakrale Instrumente kollektiver Resonanz. Zum Abschlusswochenende der Ausstellung The Archive Is An Altar präsentiert das Ensemble unter dem Titel Awoyo eine Performance zu Ehren von Yemayá – der Orisha des Ozeans sowie der Strömungen von Atem, Schwingung und Erinnerung, die alles Lebendige durchziehen.
Verwurzelte in Yorùbá-Traditionen, afrodiasporischen Spiritualitäten und queeren Schwarzen Erfahrungen, ist Awoyo ein klangliches Ritual der Erneuerung. Das Ensemble versteht den Körper als Gefäß der Resonanz und die Stimme als Trägerin von Fürsorge und ruft die transformierenden Kräfte von Wasser (omi) und Feuer (ina) an. Inspiriert von den musikalischen und rituellen Praktiken der afrokubanischen Yorùbá-Priesterin und Batá-Lehrerin Amelia Pedroso (1947–2020), folgt die Performance Spuren der Hingabe, Zugehörigkeit und der Rückbindung zu den Ahnen.

Founded in 2025 by Ayebainemi Abieyuwa Ése, Eden Alero, and Evan Ifekoya, as part of the film with the same name, MODUPE Ensemble brings together voice, drum, and movement as sacred instruments for collective attunement. For the closing weekend of The Archive Is An Altar, the ensemble presents Awoyo, a performance honouring Yemayá – the Orisha of the ocean and the currents of breath, vibration, and memory that flow through all things.
Rooted in Yorùbá traditions, Afro-diasporic spiritualities, and queer Black experience, Awoyo is a sonic ritual of renewal. The ensemble understands the body as a vessel of resonance and the voice as a carrier of care, invoking the transformative powers of water (omi) and fire (ina). Drawing inspiration from the musical and ritual practices of Afro-Cuban Yorùbá priestess and Batá teacher Amelia Pedroso (1947–2020), the performance traces lines of devotion, belonging, and ancestral return.
