10.10.2026 – 31.01.2027

The solo exhibition VERbunden by artist Gabriele Stötzer, presented on the occasion of the presentation of the Kaiserring of the City of Goslar, offers a comprehensive insight into her artistic practice from the 1970s to the present day. Born in Emleben in 1953, Stötzer is an artist, author and filmmaker and one of the defining voices of the independent art and women’s movements in the GDR. Following her political imprisonment in 1977, she developed an interdisciplinary and collaborative body of work in Erfurt encompassing photography, performance, film, textiles and literature.

The exhibition spans five decades of Stötzer’s multifaceted practice, highlighting the close connection between her artistic work and questions of self-determination, the body, community and political resistance. Moving between personal experience and collective practice, she creates visual worlds that have lost none of their relevance and
that simultaneously engage with a broader international discourse on art and photography.

For the exhibition, Gabriele Stötzer is developing new works and a performance. A special edition for Goslar is being produced. Stötzer‘s work has received significant recognition in recent years: in 2026, Stötzer was awarded the Johanna and Eduard Arnhold Fellowship of the German Academy Rome – Villa Massimo; in 2024, she received the Pauli Prize from Kunsthalle Bremen; and in 2013, she was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for her political and artistic engagement in the GDR. Her largest survey exhibition to date, Dabei sein und nicht schweigen, is currently on view at the Gropius Bau in Berlin and will be presented at Museum Abteiberg in Mönchengladbach in 2027. In conjunction with the exhibitions at the Mönchehaus Museum, Museum Abteiberg, and Angermuseum Erfurt (2028), a comprehensive monograph on Gabriele Stötzer’s work has recently been published by Spector Books in Leipzig. It is available at the Mönchehaus Museum Goslar.
